The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
