The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
