Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.

The Cause of the Latest Exchange

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made remarks following Denver's historic comeback victory over the Giants. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership

  • The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to the team hired Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
  • Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
