Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Her Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at 89 Years Old.

The award-nominated actor the celebrated Diane Ladd has died 89 years old.

This actor, whose roles included Chinatown, died at her home in California’s Ojai. Her passing was announced through a message shared by her child, Academy Award-winning star Laura Dern, her daughter.

Dern, who performed alongside her mom in various films like Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, described her as “my amazing hero as well as my profound gift as a mother”, stating that she was by her side as she died.

“She was the greatest mother, daughter, grandmother, star, artist as well as empathetic spirit that seemed almost dreamlike,” she expressed. “We were fortunate to know her. Her spirit soars with angels.”

Early Career and Rise to Fame

Her initial acting years saw small roles in TV shows including The Fugitive while the 1970s saw her starring alongside Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

During that year, 1974, she performed with actress Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s celebrated film the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.

Later Decades

In the 1980s, she appeared in the dramatic film Black Widow, a suspense story as well as humorous film National Lampoon’s holiday comedy and also took part in the sitcom Alice, a television series derived from her earlier movie.

During the next ten years, she received a further supporting actress Oscar nomination for her performance in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic where she acted as the mother of her real-life daughter Dern’s character. The next year she was awarded another nomination for her performance in the film Rambling Rose which included Dern.

“This movie that the late Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she brought us to London for a royal premiere and a celebration dedicated to us,” Ladd recalled about the film Rambling Rose. “And she sat between us, grasping our hands, with tears, viewing our performance.”

That decade also saw roles in the comedy Cemetery Club bringing her back with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political comedy, with John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she acted as Laura Dern’s mom another time. The decade also brought her Emmy nominations for work in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She kept appearing alongside her daughter in dramatic comedies the film Daddy and Them, Lynch’s Inland Empire and Mike White’s satirical show Enlightened, a TV series. She additionally starred with actress Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film plus Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.

Subsequent TV appearances featured Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.

Behind the Camera

Ladd also wrote and directed the humorous movie the movie Mrs Munck featuring herself and ex-husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a talented star,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him on a project. Actually, I am the sole female in history to direct her ex-husband. I humorously say: ‘I advise females, if you seek payback, guide your former spouse.’ However, I’m joking.”

Personal Life

Ladd was also a family member of Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a great influence on my life”.

In 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with lung disease and advised she only had half a year left but made a full recovery when her daughter transferred her to another medical facility.

“When you use your pain and avoid letting it accumulate like a sore or something, instead use it to investigate, to make the path clearer for personal and collective growth, then you are triumphing,” Ladd expressed.
